The main gate to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, known as the Nio-mon Gate, was unfortunately destroyed during the Ōnin War (1467-1477), but was later rebuilt towards the end of the 15th century and stands to this day. Kiyomizu-dera Temple, located in Kyoto Prefecture, is one of Japan’s top tourist destinations, captivating visitors with its beautiful gardens and historical structures. In front of the Nio-mon Gate, there are guardian lion-dogs called “komainu,” which have a rare configuration in Japan. Typically, komainu come in pairs representing the sounds “a” and “un,” but at the Nio-mon Gate, both lions are “a” and their mouths are open. The reason behind this unique feature remains unknown, adding to the intrigue for tourists visiting the site.
